Few works of classical music have become as visible in modern pop culture as Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. It has been used time and time again in movies, commercials and popular songs, a testament to its evocative character. The first and most famous movement, ~O Fortuna,~ is an anguished depiction of man’s powerlessness against fate. This gives way to a wild defiance of the goddess Fortune’s ever-spinning wheel, with celebrations of spring, humor and the bliss of love serving as the peak of human emotion throughout the piece. But the joy cannot last forever, as the crushing reprisal of ~O Fortuna~ reminds listeners that the wheel of fate never stops. Join us as the UMD Wind Ensemble performs this monumental masterwork, arranged for wind band by John Krance, alongside pieces by Jess Langston Turner, William Grant Still, Brooke Pierson and Cynthia Van Maanen.
