Student Recital
Jacob Cruz, flute
Jacob Cruz, a Los Angeles native, is a second-year master’s student at Carnegie Mellon University, studying with Alberto Almarza. He completed his undergraduate degree at California State University, Long Beach, where he studied with Dr. John Barcellona, Darrin Thaves, Dr. Jennifer Olson, and Diana Morgan. During his undergraduate studies, he was awarded the Cole Conservatory Scholarship, the Richard Baker Endowed Scholarship, and is now on a full-tuition fellowship at Carnegie Mellon.
Cruz has served as principal flute of the CSULB Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the University’s Premier Wind Quintet. In January 2025, he won second place at the Sphinx Orchestral Partners Audition for woodwinds. His festival experience includes being a flute fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center in 2024 and 2025, as well as a fellowship at the 2025 Spoleto Festival USA. Additional highlights include performances with the PRISMA Festival Orchestra in British Columbia, the Trentino Music Festival in Italy, and Prague Summer Nights in the Czech Republic.
