Rochester International Jazz Festival 2025 Wycliffe Gordon is a renowned musician, composer, conductor, and arranger whose career has left an indelible mark on the world of jazz. A veteran member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet from 1989 to 1995 and an original member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra from 1995 to 2000, Gordon has performed with an impressive roster of artists, including David Sanborn, Paul Simon, Natalie Merchant, Rene Marie, Dianne Reeves, and Arturo Sandoval. His arrangement of the theme song for NPR’s All Things Considered is heard daily worldwide, and his production Jazz a la Carte was recognized by The Wall Street Journal as one of the five best moments in jazz. Gordon’s compositions have been performed by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Brass Band of Battle Creek, and numerous other ensembles across the U.S. and abroad. He is a Yamaha Performing Artist and has his own line of Wycliffe Gordon Pro Signature Mouthpieces by Pickett Brass. His commissioned works span historical tributes and cultural celebrations, including Charles Henry Suite, honoring the Douglass Theatre’s 100th anniversary; Still, We Rise: He Heard My Cry, commemorating the Slave Dwelling Project; and A Soldier’s Heart, which marked the anniversary of D-Day with performances in Normandy, France. Gordon has also composed and directed projects for institutions such as the Apollo Theater, Jazzmobile, and the U.S. Embassy. His vibrant new score for the 1925 silent film Body and Soul premiered with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and was released on DVD in 2008. Learn more...
