The Georgetown University Dance Company (GUDC), currently directed by Faculty Artistic Director, Prof. Raina Lucas, proudly presented their first ever virtual gallery performance, “Sharing Screens: The Times in Which We Find Ourselves,” Dec 2nd-Dec 6th, 2020. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the performance was held online and replaced their annual Fall Works-in-Progress showcase. The website gallery featured “dance on film” solos from all 17 company members, 3 student group works, and a work by Fall 2020 Guest Choreographer, Sarah Ewing. Even though the event is now closed, please enjoy this solo selection from the Company’s showcase. desiderata - Christina Dropulic Choreographed & Edited by: Christina Dropulic Filmed by: Christina Dropulic, special thanks to Luke Dropulic Music: “Blik” by Lambert Defined as “things desired,” Max Ehrmann’s 1927 poem "Desiderata" was widely circulated among low-morale and homesick American troops during World War II. The poem offers words of encouragement, convincing readers to “not distress yourself with imaginings” and to “be gentle with yourself,” for “no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.” As we find ourselves in our spheres of increased privacy and isolation, it is easy to feel like an impostor in our own bodies, as we can begin to doubt ourselves, our accomplishments, and our relationships with others, so much so that it can feel like a battle with ourselves in search for a validation of identity. Amidst these challenging times, what helps us renounce these misconceptions? Ehrmann’s words remind us that it is through harnessing personal reflection and resilience that we can come to recognize ourselves for who we authentically and splendidly are.
