Pre-concert Talk with the Choreographers Goodson Chapel – Recital Hall Border Jazz Known for their electrifying performances and adventurous programming, internationally acclaimed saxophonist Nicolas Prost and pianist Sébastien Paindestre present Border Jazz, a program that pushes the boundaries of their instruments with dazzling technique and expressive depth. Featuring a vibrant mix of classical works and contemporary pieces, this concert promises a thrilling journey through the versatility of the modern saxophone and jazz piano. “At the Border of Jazz” brings together classical concert artist Nicolas Prost and jazz musician Sébastien Paindestre in a bold and innovative collaboration. The program explores a richly imagined dialogue between classical and jazz traditions — blending refined, composed works with openness to improvisation. Presented exclusively by this duo, the repertoire consists entirely of works written specifically for Nicolas Prost and Sébastien Paindestre during their international tours across Europe, the United States and Japan. The composers — among them Wayne Shorter, Branford Marsalis, Chris Potter, Bob Mintzer, James Carter, Paquito D’Rivera, Brad Mehldau, John McLaughlin, Dave Liebman, Ibrahim Maalouf, John Patitucci, John Helliwell, Bojan Z, Daniel Humair, Anne Paceo, Baptiste Herbin, Michel Portal, Baptiste Trotignon, Henri Texier, Alban Darche, Airelle Besson, Céline Bonacina, Pierrick Pédron, Avishai Cohen, Franck Tortiller, François Jeanneau, Riccardo Del Fra, Dave Schroeder, Nguyen Lê, Laurent de Wilde, Philippe Portejoie, Olivier Calmel, Stéphane Colin, Rich Shemaria, Leïla Olivesi, Claude Barthélemy and Sébastien Paindestre — are leading voices in jazz and popular music who were invited to compose in a “classical” style. These internationally recognized artists create a compelling fusion of musical worlds, drawing new audiences through the interplay of genres — much like Gershwin and Bernstein in the twentieth century. In addition to these world premieres, the program includes works from the chamber music repertoire reimagined in this hybrid style, with composers such as Phil Woods, Michel Petrucciani, Tony Murena, Chick Corea, John Zorn and Radiohead.
