The Palisades Charter High School Wind Ensemble, conducted by UCLA alumnus Peter Ye, joins the UCLA Wind Ensemble for a Sunday afternoon concert in Schoenberg Hall. The Pali band plays works by Paul Dukes, John Philip Sousa, John Mackey, Peter Mennin, and Bruce Yurko. The UCLA Wind Ensemble opens the second half of the concert with Big City Lights by Los Angeles-based and Atlanta-raised Marie A. Douglas, followed by Minoo Dixon’s Frequency. Los Angeles Philharmonic associate principal cellist and newly appointed UCLA professor cello Ben Hong is featured on Friedrich Gulda’s virtuosic and eclectic Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra. The concert closes with Vittorio Giannini’s mid-century Symphony No. 3, a rarely performed classic from the band repertoire.
