Annual David C. Chu Lectureship sponsored by the UGA College of Pharmacy. Featuring Dr. Kevan Shokat, Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology at the University of California in San Francisco. Dr. Shokat's topic will address "Targeting K-Ras Beyond Oncology." Kevin Shokat is the leader of a field called chemical genetics that combines chemistry and genetics to enable exquisite control of drug targeting for key proteins in cancer and Parkinson's Disease that have previously been refractory to drug development. Through this process, Professor Shokat has found many fundamentally new roles for proteins in transcription, the cell cycle, cell-fate determination, and oncogenic transformation. His work is leading to a number of new therapeutics emanating from his lab and has also opened up over 50 new disease targets that were previously not believed to be druggable.
