Josef Suk, born in 1874, was a Czech composer and one of Antonín Dvořák’s favorite students. Suk later married Dvořák’s daughter, Otilie, to whom he dedicated this work. Known primarily for his string writing, Suk incorporates string quartet textures throughout this Op. 12 set, along with folk elements in each movement that evoke the countryside.
