Three Variations on Plum Blossom is a piano adaptation by Chinese composer Wang Jianzhong, based on an ancient Chinese guqin piece. The work is inspired by the image of plum blossoms blooming in winter, a traditional symbol of purity, resilience, and inner strength in Chinese culture. It unfolds through three contrasting variations, each reshaping the original material with different colors and expressive characters. The adaptation preserves the lyrical essence of the traditional melody while expanding its sonority and expressive range on the piano, making it one of the most beloved works in the Chinese piano repertoire.
