South Carolina Ballet invites you to experience the enchanting world of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn’s iconic score. This production brings Shakespeare’s beloved comedy to life through a captivating blend of dance and music, transporting audiences to a fantastical realm where love, magic, and mischief intertwine.?
Set in an enchanted forest, the ballet follows the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors who become entangled in the whimsical disputes of the fairy king and queen, Oberon and Titania. Mendelssohn’s evocative music, composed in 1826 and later expanded in 1842, perfectly captures the play’s ethereal atmosphere and has become synonymous with Shakespeare’s work.
Columbia performances will feature live music by the SC Ballet Orchestra, conducted by Scott Weiss.
Under the artistic direction of William Starrett, this production showcases a harmonious blend of classical ballet and theatrical storytelling. Audiences will be mesmerized by the intricate choreography, lavish costumes, and imaginative sets that bring the magical forest and its inhabitants to life.?
