This talk explores how Radio Free Europe's broadcast 1964 interview and performance featuring defected jazz pianist Eugen Ciceu presented an alternative, aggressive paradigm to jazz diplomacy during the Cold War. Come learn how Romanian exiles undermined political and cultural isolationism while advocating for individual agency and creativity within a democratic, free market society. Grace Pechianu is a doctoral candidate in musicology at Indiana University, Bloomington. Her research considers networks of Romanian exiles and defected musicians, their role as contributors to Radio Free Europe, and role in facilitating communication with Romanians behind the Iron Curtain.
