She has also served as a public-school band director in northern Indiana. Under her direction, the program received consistent superior ratings at band festivals, including two state titles (2014). In 2013, she was a quarterfinalist for the first Music Educator Grammy Award. With a comprehensive background in the arts as an educator, conductor, performer, producer, arranger, editor, and media creator, Galus has led a multifaceted career, serving a variety of arts communities. At The University of Texas, she established the UTWE Live! livestream series, which reached over a half-million viewers between 2018 and 2020. She also is cofounder and owner of Keep Making Music, an ensemble media creation company based in Austin, Texas, that produced virtual performances for ensembles nationwide, including a virtual production of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. A freelance transcriber, editor, and arranger, she has written for wind ensembles, marching/pep bands, show choir, and chamber ensembles. Her major works include a wind band transcription of John Adams' Saxophone Concerto and Charles Ives' Variations on America, critical editions of Fred Junkin's setting of Respighi's Fountains of Rome, HR Kent/Mayhew Lake's setting of Overture to "La Forza del Destino," and Michael Martin's Lontano. A fierce advocate for her students and their interests, Hetrick serves as assistant professor of saxophone at the University of Arkansas, where she engages with the Saxophone Studio in applied instruction, saxophone pedagogy, chamber music, and more. She is frequently invited to teach and perform at schools and workshops throughout the United States. In her collaborations and programming, Hetrick often curates narratives that focus on the work and lives of women at the intersection of music and art. She maintains an active schedule as a solo and chamber musician, performing as a member of the sjel duo, Duo Oenomel, and Lyrique Quintette, among others. Hetrick is an avid performer of new music and has commissioned over 30 new works by such composers as Alexandra Gardner, Katahj Copley, and Viet Cuong. She has performed as a soloist with the University of Central Arkansas Wind Ensemble and The University of Texas Wind Ensemble and has played with the Symphony of North West Arkansas and the Forth Smith Symphony. Ever curious about the ubiquity and sexualization of the saxophone, Hetrick's research explores gender, iconography of the saxophone, and the effects of both on practicing saxophonists. Hetrick's research is published in Contemporary Perspectives on the Legacy of Elise Hall (1853-1924). She has lectured throughout the United States on her paper, "'He puts the pep in the party': Gender and the Saxophone in Early-Twentieth-Century American Advertisements." Hetrick has been awarded a Presser Grant, PEO Scholar Award, and a Rainwater Grant for Innovation. She previously served as assistant professor at Texas A&M International University and earned both Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in Saxophone Performance from The University of Texas at Austin, with additional study at Université Européene de Saxophone in Gap, France.
