IU Opera Theater hosts a music workshop of In the Rush, a new opera with music by Carlos Simon and libretto by Ruby Aiyo Gerber and Lynn Nottage. The cast includes Jacobs School of Music faculty, students, and alumni guests.Synopsis Eleanor, the Lenox matriarch, facing death, confesses to her children that a drop of magic from the ancient Malian Empire has been left to her family, the descendants of the sorcerers who served the Emperor Sundiata Keita in his war with the magician king Soumaoro Kanté. The magic has secretly been passed from generation to generation, inherited by one member of the family, who serves as protector and griot. With the impending death of the matriarch, it is now time for a new member to be named griot and holder of the ancient tradition. Unfortunately, with each generation's passing, the magic has dissipated. Now, with this final transfer, the last of the magic will be depleted. There is only enough left to perform a single miracle. A once close-knit family and a community, looking to rebuild after a flood, battle for possession of the magical prize.
