Music by Vojislav IvanovićAbout the Artists Music of Vojislav Ivanović, composer and guitarist, is one of astonishing diversity, ranging from contemporary classical and jazz thru fusion and rock to traditional music of the world. Born in Sarajevo, where he started playing guitar at age 10, Vojislav acquired highest academic degrees both in guitar at the Athens Conservatory with Costas Cotsiolis and in composition at the University of Sarajevo with Vojin Komadina. He performs regularly both home and abroad, solo and with orchestras including Trinity College Strings (U.K.), St. George Strings, Camerata Serbica, and Macedonia Jeunesse Musicale Symphonic. His diverse compositional output includes music for solo and accompanied instruments, choral, chamber, and orchestral works. Many artists and ensembles, including Zoran Dukić, Denis Azabagić, New Russia Symphony, and the Tijuana Festival Orchestra, have performed his music extensively all over the globe. As a film composer, Ivanović has several documentaries and feature films to his credit out of which Halda (1991) won the prestigious Prix d'Italia award. He has also recorded with such world-renowned jazz musicians as Arild Andersen, Bendik Hofseth, Paul Vertico, and Paolo Fresu. With his wife Aleksandra Ivanović, he has performed across Europe and the United States as the Levante Guitar Duo, also having released Levantine Journey (GAF) with a program Ivanović specially wrote for the Duo. In addition to his performance tours, composing, and recording, Ivanović is highly sought after for his teaching and master classes in composition and guitar and is a member of juries at international festivals and competitions, including the Guitar Foundation of America. The prestigious publishers Schott, Chanterelle Zimmerman, and Les Productions d'OZ publish his music. Besides his own releases, various artists have released over 20 CDs worldwide that include his works. Ivanović is a full professor and head of the Guitar Department at the Music Academy, University of Sarajevo East. He is founder and artistic director of GuitarUnited – International Guitar Festival in Sarajevo East, held annually since 2016. Born in Belgrade, AleksandraIvanović showed early and diverse talent for music. She started learning piano at the age of six and eventually graduated both piano and classical singing from the primary music school. After short studies in jazz singing, her interest turned to guitar and she continued her studies in classical guitar at the Belgrade Music Academy where she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in guitar performance with distinction. She won several national and international competitions amongst which are Naissus Guitar Festival, International Guitar Festival Leskovac, and Guitar Art Summer Fest in Herceg Novi. She was recipient of a prestigious grant for young talents of Serbia in 2011 and 2012. Recognized by audiences and critics alike, her delicate and sensitive performance, especially of the new works by Vojislav Ivanović led to the foundation of Levante Guitar Duo with the composer himself. Since 2008, the Duo has performed extensively at home and abroad, and their CD Levantine Journey garnered rave reviews and the appreciation of listeners worldwide. Her management skills greatly contributed to Duo's promotion, culminating in exceptional success during their three extensive tours in United States in the 2019-20 season. Recently, she started a collaboration with the innovative educational platform Guitar by Masters, which features famous guitarists and composers, recording three different suites for young players composed by Vojislav Ivanović. She is a cofounder and secretary general of GuitarUnited �� International Guitar Festival at Sarajevo East, held since 2016. Aleksandra's teaching experience includes working with students of all ages ranging from infants to university level students, and she has acquired considerable experience in planning and organizing music events, promotion and booking as well as web design. At the end of 2024, she released her first solo album, Ivanović plays Ivanović.Natalie Boeyink, bassist and educator, serves as associate professor of music jazz studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. After earning her doctorate in music education at the Jacobs School in 2015, Boeyink spent eight years as a jazz lecturer and senior lecturer in the University of North Carolina system. She earned an M.M. in Jazz Performance at the University of Louisville and a B.M. in Jazz Studies at Jacobs. Her interest in the educational experiences and careers of jazzwomen has launched a series of research projects, conference presentations and publications, including her dissertation, "An Analysis and Description of Female Jazz Instrumentalists." An advocate for jazzwomen, Boeyink served as chair of the Jazz Education Network's Women in Jazz Committee and worked to reestablish the Sisters in Jazz Collegiate Combo Competition. Batuquê Trio is Boeyink's seasoned collaboration with drummer Andy Smith and pianist Jamaal Baptiste. Focusing on contemporary Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, and Caribbean jazz, the trio frequently appears at jazz festivals as performers and clinicians. Their first CD, Transparency, was released in 2015. A second album is forthcoming in 2024. Some of Boeyink's notable performances include appearances with Tammy McCann, Jamie Baum, Ingrid Jensen, Terri Lyne Carrington, Christine Jensen, Leni Stern, Jovino Santos Neto, Joe Piscopo, David "Fathead" Newman, Jon Hendricks, Jeff Coffin, David Liebman, and Lorraine Feather.Daniel Duarte is senior lecturer in music in guitar at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He is an active guitarist, arranger, conductor, and lecturer who has collected prizes in several guitar and chamber music competitions in the United States, Europe, and Latin America. Duarte is also a multi-instrumentalist who performs on different types of guitars and as a flutist. Duarte's primary studies were with guitarist Henrique Pinto, followed by William Buonocore, Eliot Fisk, and Ernesto Bitetti. He earned a D.M. at the Jacobs School while focusing his academic research on the topic of multiculturalism and guitar music. During his doctoral studies, Duarte had his research supported by the Presser Foundation as a recipient of the outstanding graduate music student award. His academic work also lead Marshall University to award him the Joan C. Edwards Distinguished Professor of Arts award. At Jacobs, he is the founder and director of the Guitar Ensemble, composed of 12 undergraduate and graduate students who perform fundamental repertoire related to the classical guitar tradition and various other styles while featuring original works and arrangements written specifically for the ensemble. Duarte also directs the IU All Campus Guitar Ensemble and teaches general education lectures that cover broad historical subjects related to music and guitar. At Jacobs, he has also collaborated as director of ensembles of the Latin American Music Center. As a touring artist, Duarte presents concerts with fellow guitarist and Jacobs faculty member Petar Jankovic. The duo has had dozens of appearances since 2016, reaching audiences throughout the United States and abroad while featuring a modern approach to the classical guitar repertoire during concerts and master classes.Petar Jankovic is associate professor of music in guitar at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Since starting his performance career in 1985, he has performed numerous concerts and given master classes all over the United States, Europe, and Asia, performing as a solo guitarist, chamber musician, and as a soloist with orchestras all over the world. Jankovic began his guitar studies at age eight in Serbia, where he later earned a degree in classical guitar from the renowned Belgrade Music Academy. While in Serbia, he won two gold medals, a silver medal, and two bronze medals at the National Music Competition. At age 16, he delivered his first professional performance, and by age 20, the Community College in Belgrade invited him to share his expertise with beginning classical guitar students. Jankovic went on to earn a master's degree from the Jacobs School, and in the mid-1990s, the school invited him to pursue an Artist Diploma under the guidance of Ernesto Bitetti. Still dedicated to sharing his talent through both performing and teaching, Jankovic developed a guitar program at Franklin College (Indiana) in 1997 and taught at the University of Indianapolis Music Department from 1999 to 2006. As a performer at major competitions around the globe, Jankovic's universally evocative sound has won high regard with the world's classical music community, and as a result, he has garnered numerous prestigious international awards including a bronze medal at the H. R. H. Princess Cristina 13th International Guitar Competition in Madrid (Spain); first prize at the First Annual Competition in Performance of Hispano-American music, Bloomington (Indiana); a bronze medal at the M. M. Ponce international guitar competition in 1998 in Mexico City (Mexico); 1997 Graduate Top Strings Award, Indianapolis Matinee Musicale (the first guitarist to win this award), and others. Jankovic has released five solo and chamber albums.Andy Miller is lecturer in music in percussion at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, with an emphasis in Latin jazz and Afro-Latin percussion music. An engaging performer and passionate educator, he navigates the diverse world of percussion with technical and musical precision across a broad range of artistic practices. Fostering a deep interest in the percussion music of the African diaspora, Miller has studied with master percussionists in the United States and internationally. A Fulbright grant recipient, Miller studied Afro-Colombian currulao, cumbia, and bullerengue in Colombia with La Wey Segura, Francis Lara, and Emilsen Pacheco, later returning on a Presser Graduate Music Award to study joropo music with Fernando Torres Ramirez. Miller conducted field research in Brazil with Jorge Alabê for his doctoral project, "The Language of Drumming in Afro-Brazilian Candomblé Ketu." His study of bomba percussion, song, and dance took him to Puerto Rico to study with Beto Torrens, Marién Torres, Rafa Maya, and Hector "Coco" Baréz. He studied Guinean mande drumming with Bolokada Conde and Afro-Cuban folkloric and popular percussion with Michael Spiro. Miller also champions percussion art music by Latin American composers, including a performance of Ricardo Lorenz's Venezuelan maracas concerto Pataruco with the Jacobs School's University Orchestra. Commissions include Maria José by Luis Fernando Sanchez Gooding, Silent Surface by Rafael Llanos, and Monologue IV: Bilingüismo by José Martinez. His commitment to new music has led to residencies with the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival and the Atlantic Music Festival Contemporary Ensemble. His collaborations with choreographers as a composer/performer have premiered in New York City, throughout the Midwest, and internationally. Miller served as music director of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Dance Department (2017-24), accompanying classes in styles including modern, ballet, West African, and Afro-Latin dance. He previously taught percussion at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, Olivet Nazarene University, and Bembé Drum and Dance. Miller earned degrees from IU (D.M.), the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (M.M.), and Wright State University (B.M.).
