Kristen and Pete Jutras perform "Liebesleid," one of three short pieces for violin and piano by Fritz Kreisler, collected as "Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen" (Old Viennese Melodies) and likely composed in the first years of the 20th century. Kreisler (1875--1962) had a unique approach to self-promotion. Widely regarded as a violin master, he perhaps felt the need to boost his reputation in the field of composition. For several of his works written in the style of past masters, he would ascribe their composition to the composer he sought to emulate. Years after their initial publication, he would reveal himself to be the music's true author, much to the consternation of critics, to which he simply replied, "the name changes, the value remains." Our performers, Kristen and Pete Jutras, are both faculty at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, where Kristen is Director of the UGA Community Music School and Pete serves as Director of the HHSOM.
