Light and Reflection | Frost Wind Ensemble
Sunday, November 1, 4:00 PM ESTHila Plitmann, voice Jennifer Grim, flute The Frost Wind Ensemble presents a luminous evening of contemporary music shaped by color, reflection, and the expressive power of solo artistry. Featuring distinguished guest artists Jennifer Grim, flute, and Hilá Plitmann, soprano, this program brings together virtuosic performance, bold orchestral imagination, and intimate storytelling. The concert explores sound as light and landscape through works that revel in color and atmosphere. Jennifer Grim is featured as soloist in Kevin Day’s shimmering Glimmerglass, a work that unfolds with prismatic brilliance and lyric intensity, spotlighting the flute’s remarkable ability to glide between radiance, delicacy, and expressive depth. This vivid sound world is echoed in Ryan Lindveit’s richly hued Color Theory and reaches an immersive peak in Joseph Schwantner’s iconic …and the mountains rising nowhere—a cornerstone of the wind ensemble repertoire, renowned for its mysticism and kaleidoscopic orchestration. At the emotional heart of the program is an intimate work for soprano featuring Hilá Plitmann, whose artistry brings depth and immediacy to Ted Kooser’s deeply personal poem Mother—a meditation on memory, loss, and renewal. Plitmann’s luminous voice adds a human, reflective dimension that balances the program’s expansive instrumental palette. Together, these works form a cohesive artistic journey, balancing virtuosity and vulnerability while highlighting the Frost Wind Ensemble’s commitment to contemporary voices, meaningful collaboration, and transformative musical experiences.
