Shared Spaces | Frost Wind Ensemble
Sunday, October 4, 4:00 PM EDT

Svetoslav Stoyanov, percussion The Frost Wind Ensemble presents Shared Spaces, an evening of dynamic contemporary music that explores collaboration, contrast, and the evolving relationship between soloist and ensemble. At the center of the program are two compelling works that challenge traditional roles and invite the audience into vibrant, shared sonic landscapes. The concert features Mason Bates’s Sideman, performed with acclaimed percussionist Svet Stoyanov. A genre‑blurring work infused with kinetic energy and rhythmic drive, Sideman reimagines the concerto relationship by placing the soloist both within and alongside the ensemble—at times leading, at times blending, constantly reshaping the musical dialogue. Stoyanov’s virtuosic presence brings clarity and intensity to Bates’s electrifying sound world, where acoustic color and modern rhythmic language collide. Complementing Sideman is the world premiere of James David’s Concerto for Wind Ensemble, a bold new work written specifically for the expressive and dramatic possibilities of the modern wind ensemble. The concerto expands the idea of “shared space,” creating moments of intimacy, tension, and collective power as solo voices emerge from—and recede into—the larger ensemble texture. Together, the two works frame a compelling conversation about individuality, collaboration, and the future of large‑ensemble music. Shared Spaces reflects the Frost Wind Ensemble’s commitment to contemporary voices, innovative programming, and meaningful artistic partnerships. By pairing a landmark work of the contemporary repertoire with an important new premiere, this concert offers audiences an engaging and forward‑looking musical experience—one that celebrates virtuosity, creativity, and the powerful connections forged through sound. Variations and Visions | Frost Symphony Orchestra
Saturday, October 17, 7:30 PM EDT

Gerard Schwarz, conductor Cello Student Soloist, TBA This concert opens with Eugene Goossens’ Jubilee Variations. Written in celebration of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s 50th Anniversary in 1945, the work is a collaborative set of variations on Goossens’ original theme. He invited ten American composers - including Aaron Copland, Paul Creston, Howard Hanson, and William Schuman - to each contribute a variation, while he himself composed the finale. From this American opening, the program turns to Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Inspired by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his admiration for the Classical style, Tchaikovsky uses an original theme in the Rococo style. He worked closely with the German cellist Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, for whom the piece was written. Fitzenhagen later made significant changes to the piece, going as far as rearranging the order of the original eight variations, and eliminating the final one. The program concludes with Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 in F major, Op. 90. Although the shortest of his four symphonies, it remains one of his most powerful and concentrated works. After listening to the first and final movements, Antonin Dvorak remarked, “I say without exaggerating that this work surpasses his first two symphonies; if not, perhaps, in grandeur and powerful conception—then certainly in—beauty.” The symphony opens with the motif F-Ab-F, widely interpreted as a musical representation of Brahms’ personal motto, rei aber froh (free but happy). Brahms developed this motto in response to his friend, Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim’s motto, frei aber einsam (free but lonely). Hila Plitmann, voice Jennifer Grim, flute The Frost Wind Ensemble presents a luminous evening of contemporary music shaped by color, reflection, and the expressive power of solo artistry. Featuring distinguished guest artists Jennifer Grim, flute, and Hilá Plitmann, soprano, this program brings together virtuosic performance, bold orchestral imagination, and intimate storytelling. The concert explores sound as light and landscape through works that revel in color and atmosphere. Jennifer Grim is featured as soloist in Kevin Day’s shimmering Glimmerglass, a work that unfolds with prismatic brilliance and lyric intensity, spotlighting the flute’s remarkable ability to glide between radiance, delicacy, and expressive depth. This vivid sound world is echoed in Ryan Lindveit’s richly hued Color Theory and reaches an immersive peak in Joseph Schwantner’s iconic …and the mountains rising nowhere—a cornerstone of the wind ensemble repertoire, renowned for its mysticism and kaleidoscopic orchestration. At the emotional heart of the program is an intimate work for soprano featuring Hilá Plitmann, whose artistry brings depth and immediacy to Ted Kooser’s deeply personal poem Mother—a meditation on memory, loss, and renewal. Plitmann’s luminous voice adds a human, reflective dimension that balances the program’s expansive instrumental palette. Together, these works form a cohesive artistic journey, balancing virtuosity and vulnerability while highlighting the Frost Wind Ensemble’s commitment to contemporary voices, meaningful collaboration, and transformative musical experiences. Gerald Schwarz, conductor Robynne Redmon, vocal soloist This program is devoted entirely to Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 in D minor. Often regarded as the longest symphony in the standard orchestral repertoire, this monumental work unfolds across six movements, organized into two parts: a colossal opening movement, followed by five contrasting movements that vividly evoke the beauty and spirit of nature. In an 1896 letter to Max Marschalk, Mahler describes the work as “A Summer’s Midday Dream.” Featuring an extensive ensemble including a women’s chorus, children’s chorus, and mezzo-soprano soloist, the symphony stands as one of Mahler’s most ambitious works. Gerard Schwarz, conductor Brian Lynch, trumpet The program opens with Knoxville: Summer of 1915 by Samuel Barber, a lyrical work for voice and orchestra, set to a 1938 prose text by James Agee. Evoking a dreamlike evening in the American South, the text is from a child’s perspective, at times blurring into the voice of adulthood, creating a deeply reflective and nostalgic atmosphere. The concert continues with a world premiere trumpet concerto by Brian Lynch, Grammy-award Frost faculty member. The program concludes with Igor Stravinsky’s Petroushka (1911). One of his most celebrated works, the ballet tells the story of the loves and jealousies of three puppets brought to life in a Russian fair. Petroushka seamlessly brings music, dance, and design together in a unified whole. SAT / MAR 27, 2027 / 7:30 PM Gusman Concert Hall $30 $25 $15 Purchase tickets here. Set a reminder here. Chad Cannon, composer & violin Hui Wu, piano Timothy Rauch, animation Frost students performers, TBA Experience Music for the Oceans, a powerful multimedia concert by Juilliard-trained composer Chad Cannon that brings the beauty and urgency of coral reef preservation to the stage. Presented in partnership with the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science and Ocean Awareness Week, this immersive performance blends live music, scientific insight, and stunning visual storytelling to explore one of the most critical environmental challenges of our time. Coral reefs, often called the “rainforests of the sea,” support a vast diversity of marine life and play a vital role in coastal protection and global ecosystems. Yet today, these fragile systems are under unprecedented threat from rising ocean temperatures, pollution, and acidification, leading to widespread coral bleaching events that are occurring with increasing frequency and severity around the world. Cannon’s score reflects both the wonder of these ecosystems and the fragility of their current state, while visual elements drawn from real-world research illuminate the environmental forces at play. The result is an evening that is as thought-provoking as it is moving; inviting audiences to engage emotionally and intellectually with the future of our oceans.
