The Denbo Center for Humanities & the Arts presents Conversations & Cocktails with UT Martin Dean Jeffrey Bibbee, “Chaucer for Children and the Art of Housekeeping: Mary Eliza Joy Haweis and Victorian Domesticity.” Mary Eliza Joy Haweis (1848-1898) was a 19th century Martha Stewart. Her Art of Housekeeping (1889) was a best seller, and Haweis brought Chaucer to a new late Victorian audience with her exalted Chaucer for Children series. Conventional wisdom assumes that this best-selling author’s Chaucer works, and her varied domestic books, were written and illustrated to provide needed income during her financially and emotionally turbulent marriage – she wrote of the perfect household that had eluded her during adulthood. This oversimplification ignores the antecedents found in her rather remarkable childhood. Explore the roots of this remarkable writer – a leader in the arts and crafts movement. Dr. Jeffrey R. Bibbee is an historian who focuses 19th and 20th century British studies with an emphasis on politics and religion. Bibbee completed his degrees in history at Auburn University (BA 1997, MA 1999) and King’s College London (PhD 2008). His doctoral thesis focused on the intersectionality of foreign policy and ecumenism before the start of the Great War. Jeffrey has held faculty appointments in history at the University of North Alabama and at the University of Tennessee at Martin. He currently serves as Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Bibbee is the Founding Director of the UNA Centre for British Studies and remains active with the North American Conference on British Studies. In 2018-19, Bibbee was named a research fellow at King’s College London and held a research fellowship with the Georgian Papers Programme – a project based at Windsor Castle. Prior to his work in higher education, Bibbee taught primary and secondary students for Decatur City Schools (AL) and at the Highlands School in Birmingham, Alabama. This virtual talk is part of the 2026-2027 Conversations & Cocktails series presented by the Denbo Center for Humanities & the Arts. Conversations & Cocktails is a free public lecture and discussion series that showcases the original research of our distinguished UT arts and humanities faculty. The Denbo Center for Humanities & the Arts' Distinguished Lecture Series presents Moya Bailey, "Authenticity in AI Times." As our universities push AI into the administrative and classroom dynamics of our campuses, some of us question how we remain true to the values of higher education that drew us to the profession. Professor Moya Bailey's talk invites us to imagine critical thinking in a world on fire, with less and less water to put it out because of datacenters and AI everywhere. Moya Bailey is a Professor at Northwestern University and is the founder of the Digital Apothecary and co-founder of the Black Feminist Health Science Studies Collective. She is the digital alchemist for the Octavia E. Butler Legacy Network and the Board President of Allied Media Projects, a Detroit-based movement media organization that supports an ever-growing network of activists and organizers. She is a co-author of #HashtagActivism: Networks of Race and Gender Justice (MIT Press, 2020) and is the author of Misogynoir Transformed: Black Women’s Digital Resistance (New York University Press, 2021). She is an award-winning documentarian after completing the short documentary You Just Watch & See (2025) featuring her late Cousin Dollie, and she is completing a docuseries Misogynoir in Medicine. This talk is part of the 2026-2027 Distinguished Lecture Series presented by the Denbo Center for Humanities & the Arts and in connection with the DCHA annual theme, "Authenticity: Identity & Place." "Viral Musicking and the Rise of Noisy Platforms" Abstract: Even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, “going viral” had nonetheless become commonplace—the epidemiological metaphor characterizing an increasingly-familiar trajectory of explosive circulation, remix, and reportage expanding from individual nodes of audiovisual content online. This presentation briefly historicizes and contextualizes the contagious concept, before suggesting how “virality”—as aesthetic repertoire, as popular narrative, as social logic made concrescent in platform architectures—might also be understood as a form of musicality. I argue that participation in the production, watching, listening to, circulating, or sharing of “viral” digital internet objects has constituted a significant site of 21st-century musical practice. And across the 21st century, digital platforms have adapted to facilitate this viral musicality, using music’s positive capacities—aesthetic pleasure, communal participation, social connectivity—to enable corporate profit-making, corral attention, and incentivize acceptance of increasing technocapital enclosure of the internet and everyday life. Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle is an enrolled citizen of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and lives in Cherokee, North Carolina. A graduate of Yale University and the College of William & Mary, Clapsaddle is the author of Even As We Breathe (UPK, 2020), the first novel published by an enrolled citizen of the Eastern Band of Cherokee. The novel was a finalist for the Weatherford Award, winner of the 2021 Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award, and named one of NPR’s Best Books of 2020. This talk is part of the 2026-2027 Distinguished Lecture Series presented by the Denbo Center for Humanities & the Arts and in connection with the DCHA annual theme, "Authenticity: Identity & Place." The Denbo Center for Humanities & the Arts Presents Conversations & Cocktails: "Samurai Superstars in Antebellum America" with Natalia Doan. This virtual talk will explore how, in 1860, seventeen-year-old samurai Tateishi Onojirō and his rumored flirtations and popularity with American women during the first-ever Japanese diplomatic mission to the US sparked national controversy and questioning of antebellum ideas about race and culture. Dr. Natalia Doan is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she teaches the cultural and intellectual history of modern and early modern Japan. She received her doctorate in Asian Studies from the University of Oxford and is the author of Civil War Samurai: The 1860 Japanese Embassy and Tateishi Onojirō in Antebellum America (Leiden University Press, 2026). In recognition of a generous gift from the Laffont family, the Met’s nationwide vocal competition—known since its founding in 1954 as the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions—begins a new chapter as the Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition. The Competition discovers promising young opera singers and assists in the development of their careers. A native of Elgin, Illinois, Mike Anderson is a professional musician and educator in Knoxville, Tennessee. Mike currently serves as Principal Tuba for the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Brass Quintet, the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, and has appeared with the Illinois Brass Band, Lexington Brass Band, Blue Lake Festival Band, Varna International Muzika! Festival Orchestra, and Tallahassee Community Chorus Orchestra. Mike has also garnered success in multiple competitions, including winning the 2023 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference Mock Band Competition.In addition to his orchestral work, Mike is an adjunct instructor of tuba at Tennessee Tech University. Mike holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and a master's degree in performance from Florida State University. Professor Ellen Price Elder is Professor of Piano at the University of Southern Mississippi where she teaches applied piano at the graduate and undergraduate levels and piano pedagogy. The University of Tennessee Rocky Top Jazz Summit is an exciting one-day jazz intensive for high school students hosted by the UT jazz faculty at the beautiful Natalie L. Haslam College of Music on April 3, 2027. You’ll learn the basics of jazz improvisation, get helpful insight into playing your specific instrument in masterclasses, and jam with other students from around the region. You’ll also be placed into a small group of similarly-skilled students, in which you will be coached by a professional jazz musician. The Rocky Top Jazz Summit is your opportunity to meet new people who share your love for jazz, interact with and learn from the expert musicians and educators who make up the University of Tennessee jazz faculty, and grow your musical skills in a fun, welcoming, and nurturing environment.The Rocky Top Jazz Summit is a special workshop that is open to all high-school students through nomination by their band director, lessons instructor, or jazz band leader.
